The Sussex County Democratic Party has donated $1,000 to the Food Bank of Delaware in an effort to help needy local families. The money was raised at the party’s prayer breakfast the week before Thanksgiving.

With just under 100 people in attendance, the prayer breakfast’s focus was to bring together various faith communities to celebrate the values of the county – commitment, compassion, charity and generosity. The Rev. Gary Meekins presented the opening invocation, addressing the need for more open hearts and open minds throughout the county.

The Sussex County Community Choir resonated the theme of connectedness with a stirring rendition of “Amazing Grace.” Keynote speaker Pastor Israel Figeroa demonstrated how language is not a barrier to communication by infusing humor and poignant examples of community service through a Spanish interpreter.

The Rev. Paula Maiorano from the Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware emphasized how the human condition knows no boundaries, and Rabbi Susan Warshaw concluded the service asking all present to go forward and spread the message of peace.

“The Interfaith Prayer Breakfast was more than just a community event,” said Mitch Crane, chair of the Sussex County Democrats. “It was planned as an outreach program to give back to the county, and this year we are donating the $1,000 proceeds to the Delaware Food Bank. Just like the fans donated during the summer, we recognize the responsibility we all share to take care of our fellow neighbors no matter what time of year it is.”
